Penang International Airport is situated 16km south of Georgetown, the capital city of Penang, and connects with all major cities in Southeast Asia.

The Airport can handle up to 6.5 million passengers per year. The airport in the tiny island served 7.8 million passengers in 2018 — four times more than its population of 1.76 million.

Its runways is of 3,353m in total length and the airport cargo centre can handle 360,000 tonnes of cargo.

The airport’s runways are measured at 10,997 ft (3,352 meters) in length and it recorded 147,057 tonnes of airfreight movements in 2017.

It serves most major airlines, including two local budget airlines, namely AirAsia and Firefly.

It has a variety of retail and duty-free outlets, cafe and restaurants, as well as premium passenger lounges for travelling convenience and comfort.

Bus Services
The main bus station in George Town is located at Victoria Street and passengers staying in the city’s hotels can go to this bus terminal for a bus shuttle to the Airport.

The Rapid Penang Bus lines 401 and 401E are running shuttle service between the airport and Komtar and the Jetty.

The busses run every 30 minutes and take around 1 hour to reach their final destination. Bus 401 also goes through south Ekspres Bas terminal, which has connections to mainland cities in Penang.

Taxi Services
If you plan to take a taxi to the Airport, it is best to ask the hotel staff for help. Or when hiring a taxi, negotiate a fixed price to the airport or insist the driver uses the taxi meter during the journey.

The taxi fare to the airport should be around RM40. The time for getting to Penang International Airport from George Town city centre is around 45 minutes by taxi.
Facilities and services
The information counter is located at the arrivals hall for the passengers to make enquiries if they need any help. It is first point of contact in case of lost luggage.


The terminal buildings offers duty free shopping, restaurants and cafeterias, bank and bureau de change for currency exchange, gift shops, pharmacy, a first-aid station for minor emergencies and car rental desks.


The WiFi hotspot is located in the arrivals hall and there passengers can also find the business centre, which offers telephones, printing and fax services. A VIP lounge is also available for selected passengers.

The passenger terminal consists of two levels, with the ground level being used for arrivals and the upper level being used for departures. Sky bridged connect the two levels and passengers can walk to board their planes.

The airport is equipped with disabled-friendly facilities like specially adapted toilets, ramps and lifts, plus specially designated parking spaces for the disabled and people with reduced mobility.


The Airport has only one passenger terminal building and there are two cargo terminals. In total the airport has 17 aircraft stands.

The terminal building has 32 check-in desks, 8 air bridges, 11 gates and 3 baggage reclaim conveyor belt.


Parking facilities
There are a total of 808 short term parking spaces for both long and short-term parking at the Penang International Airport.

Penang International Airport parking is located within an easy walking distance of the passenger terminal. Departures from Penang Airport should leave plenty of time for parking and check-in to avoid flight interruption.


For just a quick pick up or drop off in the long and short-term parking facilities, passengers are charged RM0.50 for 10 minutes and then RM1.00 for 30 minutes’ of parking.

Penang International Airport parking spaces for disabled passengers are located closest to the passenger terminal and passengers with reduced mobility can get assistance from the car park to the terminal building, if they call their airline in advance to arrange this service.

Leaving the airport to town

As the the airport is situated at the south of George Town, getting to Penang’s capital city, George Town, is quick and convenient. It takes just 20 minutes to cover the 16 km distance using the Bayan Lepas Highway and the route is well sign-posted.

There are several major cities quite close to the airport. Bayan Baru is just 6 km away and Pulau Betong is situated some 11 km away, while Tanjong Tokong is located 24 km from Penang Airport.

Passengers arriving at Penang have a choice of public transport available. There are taxis and there are also 3 bus routes taking visitors into the capital city. The Rapid Penang service has its own bus counter on the ground floor level of the arrivals hall and a ticket for bus line U401 costs around RM2 – RM3.
The bus will stop at a number of halts until it gets to Komtar, from where a 5 to 10 minute walk will take visitors to hotels like the Tune Hotel.

Passenger can book a taxi at the taxi counter located at the arrivals hall. The person in charge will confirm the destination of the passenger and issue a voucher to the passenger upon payment.

The passenger then takes the paid voucher to the taxi stand and wait for the taxi driver. The taxi driver next in line will collect the voucher and send the passenger to the destination.

The taxi fare for Penang Island is categorized to 7 different zones. Zone 1 costs around RM14, Zone 2 will cost around RM22 and Zone 5 to George Town will cost around RM38. From midnight 12am to 6am, there will be a 50% additional surcharge for taxi services.
