AirAsia CEO asks how aviation regulator Mavcom can justify equal charges at both airports.
AirAsia group chief executive officer Tony Fernandes wants the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) to explain the equal passenger service charges (PSCs) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2).

“How can KLIA and klia2 have the same charges? How does Mavcom justify that to the public? No aerotrain, worse passenger comfort etc,” he said on his Twitter account on Wednesday.
Last October, the aviation regulator revised the PSCs for airports in Malaysia, introducing a new tier for travel to Asean countries of RM35 per passenger from the previous RM65.
The PSC for international trips excluding Asean countries was raised to RM73 for KLIA from RM65 previously, RM50 for klia2 from RM32, and RM73 for other airports from RM65.
The PSC for domestic trips meanwhile was set at RM11 for all airports, from RM9 (KLIA), RM6 (klia2) and RM9 (other airports).
The new rates came into effect in January 2018.
On Aug 15, Mavcom said it was reviewing the PSC again to standardise it for both KLIA and klia2.
Mavcom chief operating officer Azmir Zain said the new PSC for both airports would likely be implemented in January 2018.
Under the revised rates, international PSCs at klia2 will be further raised to RM73, to match the rates for international departures from all other airports.
“Mavcom has to see the success of Langkawi Airport with lower charges,” Fernandes said on his Twitter feed.
“It’s great news. From Macau to the Philippines to Thailand to Japan. Airports are changing. Only Mavcom and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), but that will change.”
