PJ Utara MP says MAHB seems to have forgotten how former Public Accounts Committee chief Nur Jazlan had criticised klia2 for not being 'customer centric'.
Tony Pua has called out Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) for trying to dismiss his criticism on the increase in passenger service charges (PSC) at klia2 in a statement issued yesterday.
The Petaling Jaya Utara MP referred to the comment from the airport operator on how it had engaged with him and other members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) previously.
In its statement, MAHB had said: “We have also explained numerous times to YB Tony Pua along with the other members during the PAC sessions that after numerous engagement sessions with key stakeholders, klia2 development had undergone significant scope increase due to changing requirements by the key stakeholders, including the government agencies and AirAsia.”
However, Pua said that MAHB had ignored the conclusion made by the PAC in 2014 on the various issues relating to the construction of klia2.
“MAHB seems to have forgotten that the damning PAC Report on MAHB concluded that the excuses given by the top management of MAHB were misleading, untenable and unjustifiable.
“The then PAC chairman, Nur Jazlan Mohamed said MAHB was ‘not being customer-centric’ when ‘MAHB should be building airports for people to use and not determine what people should use’,” Pua said referring to the Pulai MP, who is now deputy home minister.
The DAP national publicity secretary added that the PAC had strongly criticised MAHB’s arrogance for intentionally abstaining from engagement with its key customers like AirAsia when designing and constructing the airport.
“The PAC Report had concluded that ‘Malaysia has lost a golden opportunity to develop the most competitive low-cost carrier hub in the Asia Pacific region’.
“Today, Malaysians have to pay for the follies of MAHB with a massive 46% hike in Passenger Service Charges (PSC).”
MAHB’s statement yesterday was made in response to Pua’s criticisms against the impending PSC increase from next month.
Pua had criticised MAHB and the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) over a statement that both KLIA and klia2 “provided a similar quality of service”.
He claimed the fee hikes are being imposed as MAHB has to now cover the “astronomical cost overruns” in building klia2.
However, MAHB had justified the PSC increase for non-Asean international flights out of klia2, saying it was because klia2 is a “permanent second terminal to KLIA”, and not a low-cost carrier airport.
