AT THE newly revamped Tune Hotel in Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2), simplicity perfected means sticking to the core fundamentals of hospitality, minus the unnecessary fuss.
Check-in time takes no more than four minutes. The bar is simply called “Minum” while the all-day dining restaurant is called “Makan”.

The rooms are clean with fast WiFi service. The water pressure in its bath showers is decently strong and the beds are comfortably dressed in soft cotton sheets.
However, guests who came to celebrate the hotel’s new look say much has changed since its early days.
Today, for the 467-room Tune hotel klia2 which records about 500 check-ins daily, air conditioning is no longer an issue.
During a tour of the newly refurbished rooms in the Garden Wing, bathrooms sport see-through walls to give the feeling of a larger overall space.
Towels are folded into flowers. There are lemongrass essential oil in the hand wash, lavender in body wash and peppermint in the conditioning shampoo.
A swivel bracket enables guests sleeping on the upper tier of a bunk bed to tilt the screen upwards with ample power and USB points to ensure gadgets never run out of juice.
Adding to that whimsical touch is a notice board featuring the hotel’s latest promotions. And you can ask for more towels without having to pay extra.
Guests are also welcome to help themselves to the complimentary postcards, some of which feature the works of Malaysian artist Marvin Chan.
Also, at the outdoor lounge in Minum is one of Chan’s public sculptures, a composition of mild steel and titanium blades from 2017.
He has another installation made with repurposed plane parts titled “Stingray inside Makan”. From observation, the hotel has a beautiful art collection because ECM Libra chairman Datuk Kalimullah Hassan who has a stake in Tune Hotels, is an avid collector.
To celebrate the hotel’s new feel, Steve Earl, an Australian chef who runs La Bimba restaurant in Great Ocean Road, Victoria, was flown in to present a five-course dinner of rock lobster, wine and wood roasted duck at Makan. I
It was observed that care was taken in the Cabernet Sauvignon which had a wonderful fruitiness to its body. Unfortunately, this menu will not be available to regular diners at this all-day diner as it is an introduction to the “pop up kitchen” concept where guest chefs will become a recurrent theme.
The event also saw the announcement of the upcoming Ormond Hotel in Chow Kit, scheduled for completion in 2019. The 115-room hotel will be located in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and its design will feature the colourful history of Chow Kit’s past.
The Ormond chain is part of the Tune Hotel Group’s new hospitality brand.
Also present at the event were ECM Libra group managing director Lim Kian Onn, Tune Group chairman Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and Tune Hotels chief executive officer Mark Lankester.
