Pakatan Rakyat (PR) has called on the Transport Ministry to conduct an independent audit over the “perpetual delays” and cost increase for the new low cost carrier’s terminal klia2.
PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar and DAP national publicist secretary Tony Pua said the Malaysian Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB) must stop shifting the goal post without providing proper explanation.
Pua accused Malaysia Airports team of incompetency and failing to take responsibility of the "perpetual delays" in the completion of the new low cost klia2 and with costs inflating to RM5 billion.
He pointed out the project, which was originally slated to be completed by September 2011, was announced by MAHB general manager Faizah Khairuddin on March 8 this year that the opening date of klia2 has been deferred to June 28 in conjunction with Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s 15 year anniversary.
MAHB, however, announced on May 7 that there was an indefinite delay in the opening of the airport for only Eraman general manager Fawzy Ahmad to say seven days later that the airport will ready by the fourth quarter this year.
“We are not surprised if the airport will be completed for the 16th anniversary of KLIA which is on 28th of June next year,” said Pua.
“MAHB was clearly lying when they confirmed that klia2 will be ready on March 28 and that it was on schedule which is a clear cut of incompetent and lying.
“As a listed company in the stock exchange, they can be sued for providing misleading and inaccurate information,” he added.
Pua also added that the original costs of klia2 of RM1.7 billion in 2007 has ballooned to RM4 billion in Oct last year.
“We do not know what the final cost would be but we don’t think it would be far from the RM5 billion mark as said by (AirAsia‘s Tan Sri) Tony Fernandes,” Pua said.
Pua added the increasing costs of klia2 had become a financial burden for MAHB who announced plans to take a RM1 billion loan this year in addition to the RM3.1 billion sukuk bonds taken in 2010.
Pakatan Rakyat, he added, was seeking a meeting with the new acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein for the go ahead of the independent audit on the klia2.
Pua also wants MAHB to confirm the increase of costs for klia2 and the dateline for the project.
