klia2 will be the first hybrid airport in Malaysia, shedding its low-cost terminal label to provide Business Class services to accommodate AirAsia‘s needs.
The airport will also have total segregation of arrival and departure passengers, upgrading the building to three storeys from two previously.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said this was following the largest airline to utilise klia2 AirAsia’s request to increase facilities, as it had expanded its services to the Business Class passengers under AirAsia X.
“klia2 is now considered a hybrid airport, not a low-cost terminal anymore, on the request by AirAsia to increase the capacity of the airport to accommodate future needs,” Aziz said at the inaugural send-off of Firefly‘s newest aircraftATR72-600.
He said that the passenger segregation feature would lend a hand in addressing the elusive human trafficking activities at the airport.
He reassured that the airport would not face any more delays for its new completion date set at April 30, 2014, and that the cost should not escalate beyond the RM4bil set.
Aziz added that the number of non-compliance reports lodged by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) against contractors of klia2 now stood at 230.
“It would take (about) five months for the contractors to rectify the parts that did not match the specifications set by MAHB, and this is one of the reasons the airport’s construction has been delayed,” he said.
On Firefly Sdn Bhd’s latest ATR72-600 turboprop aircraft addition to its fleet, he said this showed the potential of the aviation industry in Malaysia that was growing well.
