More than eighty per cent of the commercial retail space in klia2 have been taken up, and a big number of these companies comprise local retailers rather than international ones.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Hasan Malek said so far, about 60 per cent of the total retailers who have signed up to set up outlets at klia2 are local companies.
He said that these local companies would be playing an important role to market and introduce Malaysian products to travellers, especially those arriving from foreign countries.
"Not only that it will be a hub for low cost airlines, this airport has the potential to be the new commercial and retail hub for the nation as travellers will be able to purchase various products," Hasan said after visiting klia2, yesterday.
Also present during the visit were Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah and the ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Alias Ahmad.
There are a total of 225 retail units in klia2 in its main terminal building and also at its gateway known as landslide mall.
He said the KLIA hub was one of the entry point projects (EPP) under the National Key Economic Areas (NKEA) for the wholesale and retail sector which was under the purview of the ministry.
Even though it is a private initiative by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), Hasan said the government acts as a facilitator to ensure successful implementation of the project.
He added that the gross national income (GNI) for the project was RM960 million and would be creating a total of 12,000 job opportunities in the country by year 2020.
"I hope that the KLIA hub will provide an opportunity for our local companies to market and promote their products. I will ensure that these local products are placed at strategic locations so it can attract the travellers," Hasan said.
