AirAsia group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes appeared to have taken a dig at the Express Rail Link (ERL), which will raise its fares by RM20 from Jan 1.
“It’s a great product but it’s expensive,” he tweeted yesterday, referring to the ERL which connects KLIA and klia2 to the city. He also wrote that it would be “cheaper to fly” now.
In another tweet, he alluded to how AirAsia had become unpopular in its fight against increase in cost and asking others in the aviation sector to be more efficient.
Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd has recently announced that the new fare for a one-way trip between KL Sentral and KLIA/klia2 would be RM55, up from RM35.
It said the price revision was approved by the Government through the Land Public Transport Commission in accordance with Section 120 of the Land Public Transport Act and that it was the first revision since it began operations almost 14 years ago.
However, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced at the closing of the Umno general assembly on Saturday that there would be discounts of up to 50% for pupils, university students, the disabled and senior citizens using the ERL and KTM Komuter.
1Malaysia Students Discount Card (KADS1M) holders, the disabled and senior citizens using the ERL transit service would also receive a 30% discount on the fares, he said.
Users of the ERL’s Putrajaya sector will enjoy a reduction in the price of their monthly pass although the quantum is not known yet.
