Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is in plans to build 16 more walkalators amounting to RM38 million at klia2, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi said the walkalators were an effort to ease for travellers to commute between sections of the airport, more so for the less-abled.
"MAHB is planning to build the new walkalators as a facility to all users, including the disables. The walkalators will be built around the airport, especially in sections which contain slopes," he said in response to a question posed by Datuk Noor Ehsanuddin Mohd Harun Narrashid (BN-Kota Tinggi) on whether services at the klia2 terminal were disable and senior citizen-friendly.
Aziz added that there were also efforts to take out terminal partitions to enable easier use of facilities.
"MAHB will also remove the partitions that are currently placed between terminals to ease the common use of facilities for all users. At the moment, facilities in some terminals cannot be used the terminals are individually-partitioned.
"In terms of commercial units, management will look into relocating the ones that restrict movement of airport users," he said.
Aziz clarified that there were numerous facilities already in place to ease disables, but more will come.
"We have the aerobridge service at every departure gate, a 24-hour buggy service at carparks and around the terminal, waiting and check-in spaces and special lanes for disables, inclined ramps at the main terminal building and toilets for disables all around the terminal."
Other than that, Aziz added that klia2 also had four elevators enabled for wheelchair use, braille markings in all elevators, free wheelchair service and 16 walkalators around the terminal.
When asked about the failure for the elderly to board buggies prepared by the terminal, Aziz said the use of the facility must be booked beforehand to avoid congestion.
