Yesterday (Thursday, 12th October) a netizen who goes by @slainthayer posted a thread on Twitter explaining why they believe the 16 Sierra MRT station is possibly the most useless station of them all.
The first reason was stated in the original post, saying that it’s the most desolated in the entire network.
The user elaborated in the thread saying that there’s not even a parking lot for passengers and that the nearest buildings are at least 500 metres away.
In terms of ridership, it was said that the MRT at this specific station would only have 450 passengers a day, making it the lowest in the system.
The user also provided the masterplan by the developer noting that although a station in the middle of nowhere would be perfect for affordable housing to be developed around the area, it most likely will not happen anytime soon in the near future.
“They should have just shelved the station and served the town with an MRT Feeder bus instead. The ridership of the station is just abysmal. The fares collected don’t even cover the staffing cost. Some MRT Feeder buses have higher ridership than this,” the netizen concluded.
Many agreed with @slainthayer that the 16 Sierra MRT station is not the most convenient to travel to as it is placed too far away.
Some claimed that these desolated MRT stations were only built not for the public but for developers to reap profit with new projects since the station has increased the land’s value.
A few shared their experiences of riding the MRT at the station saying that they never needed to worry about crowds during peak hours since there’s hardly anybody there.
For your information, the land around the 16 Sierra MRT station is owned by IOI Properties Group and they recently launched the Sierra Fresco and IOI Galleria last month.
After a quick check, the new buildings are located 1.1 kilometres away from the station which would take about 16 minutes to arrive there on foot. Do you agree with these points about 16 Sierra MRT station?
