Four companies, including Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary’s MMC Corp Bhd and Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB), could be in the running for the KLIA aerotrain replacement programme at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), after Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said it plans to invite participants of its previous tender to vie for the job.
MAHB told a business weekly that the tender invitation would be extended to other participants of the previous tender, of which Pestech and joint venture partner Bombardier had emerged as winners.
MMC Corp Bhd in partnership with Japan’s Mitsubish Heavy Industries; MRCB in a tie-up with Leitner-Poma of the US; Hartasuma Sdn Bhd in partnership with Austrian company DoppelmayrSeilbahnen GmbH; and SMH Rail Sdn Bhd were all reportedly participants of the previous tender, which was awarded in December 2021.
MMC Corp is famously vying for Mass Rapid Transit 3 (MRT3) project with joint venture partner Gamuda Bhd, while MRCB unit, Setia Utama LRT3 Sdn Bhd, is the main contractor of the Light Rail Transit 3 (LRT3) project.
Hartasuma’s, a company which supplied the first locally assembled passenger coaches and LRTs in Malaysia to Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, most recent job win was the RM250 million Penang Cable Car project in Penang Hill.
While SMH Rail’s, the country’s first manufacturer and assembler of metro trains under the MRT Line-1 project, last job win was a US$85 million monorail project in Mumbai, India.
It has a presence in Singapore, India, Tanzania, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, Thailand, and Cambodia.
