AirAsia X (AAX) has announced plans to increase the number of destinations to 11 by the end of the year, including to London, Dubai (United Arab Emirates) and Istanbul (Turkiye).
Since relaunching in February, the airline has been operating just two routes – to Seoul (South Korea) and New Delhi (India) – but has confirmed the launch dates of five more destinations between July and December.
The airline said it will resume flights to Haneda Airport in Tokyo from July 14, Sydney (Sept 2), Honolulu and Osaka (October) and Sapporo (December).
The dates have yet to be confirmed for four other long-haul destinations – London, Dubai, Istanbul and Auckland in New Zealand.
While the Dubai and Istanbul routes are new, AAX has flown to London but cancelled the route in 2012.
The budget airline has had to undergo substantial restructuring to survive having grounded all operations for almost two years since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020.
The Centre for Aviation reported that AAX confirmed its intention to fly the additional long-haul routes outside of the Asia-Pacific region with a simplified fleet and order book.
The seven routes which are currently in operation or with confirmed launch dates are scheduled to return with a frequency of up to four times a week.
AAX said it hopes to return to its pre-pandemic capacity in some core routes within a year.
