Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad and the ever popular KidZania Kuala Lumpur are collaborating to give children a chance to be part of the action at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (IATA Code: KUL) with an airport-themed edutainment park.

Construction of the “mini-airport” named KUL KidZania, is ongoing at the main terminal.
Upon its completion, targeted by end March this year, children will enjoy trying out jobs related to aviation security, Airport Rescue and Fire Services (AFRS), duty-free shopping, hospitality, and air traffic control.
“We are really excited about this collaboration. It will be both a fun experience for the children and they will get to better understand how an airport works,” Malaysia Airports corporate communications general manager Nik Anis Nik Zakaria told FMT.
This, she said, would especially be the case when it came to safety and security screenings.
“Hopefully, with this exposure, children will no longer be nervous or scared when they go through security screenings at airports.”
At KUL KidZania, the children will also be given mock-up luggage and the chance to see what happens when it goes through the scanner.
They will also get to wear AFRS uniforms and tackle a mini obstacle course at the theme park.
Safety and security screenings aside, there’s the retail aspect of airport operations that kids can experience first hand as well, Nik Anis said, as Malaysia Airports’ duty-free brand Eraman will set up a small shop at KUL KidZania.
“Children can either be the retailer or the shopper, and they can explore some of the products we carry like perfumes, cosmetics, and chocolates.”
As for air traffic control activities, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia will simulate a control tower system so the little ones can get a closer look at how the radar system works.
Nik Anis said the entrance fee for KUL KidZania which will be located at Anjung Malaysia on Level 5 of the KLIA main terminal, will only be RM30 per person. A portion of that amount however will be returned in the form of a rebate voucher.
Nik Anis also explained that the collaboration between Malaysia Airports and KidZania would be based on a revenue-sharing model.
Malaysia Airports, as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts, will provide the space and some investment for the structure, while KidZania will run the show.
“KidZania has been doing this for years, and they have a good track record and solid standard operating procedures and policies in handling children,” she said, adding that the edutainment park can accommodate 30 children at any one time.
For Malaysia Airports, KUL KidZania will not only be a source of revenue but an opportunity to educate children, particularly their understanding of aviation safety and security.
Nik Anis says Malaysia Airports is expecting over 50,000 children or 150 visitors a day throughout 2020.
