Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd’s (MAHB) passenger traffic for November slid 30.8% month-on-month (m-o-m) to 1.8 million, from the previous month’s 2.6 million passengers.
This is the second consecutive m-o-m decline in passenger traffic from September, which saw 3.5 million passengers.
In a filing to Bursa Malaysia today, the airport operator said Malaysia’s November traffic performance for the domestic sector was impacted by the extension of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) from October to Dec 6, which was also extended to all states in Peninsular Malaysia, except for Perlis, Pahang and Kelantan.
On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, MAHB’s network of airports reported a decline of 84.2%.
Domestic and international passenger movements recorded 1.3 million and 518,000 passengers respectively, said MAHB.
On a last-12-month basis, MAHB’s network of airports saw a decline of 61.9% with 53.6 million passengers. Overall aircraft movements declined by 73.2%, from the same month in 2019, with domestic and international aircraft movements contracting by 68.3% and 80.8% respectively, said the airport operator.
For airports in Malaysia, it registered 311,000 passenger movements in November 2020, a 96.4% y-o-y decline, with the domestic and international sectors recording 234,000 (-94.5% y-o-y) and 78,000 (-98.2% y-o-y) passengers, respectively.
KLIA passenger movements were down by 97.8% y-o-y at 113,000. November passenger movements for KLIA Main Terminal and klia2 decreased by 96.7% and 98.8% respectively, said the airport operator.
Passenger movements at MASB Airports, on the other hand, decreased by 94.4% y-o-y with 198,000 passengers.
Meanwhile, overall aircraft movements in Malaysia decreased by 82.5% y-o-y. Domestic and international aircraft movements declined by 78.9% y-o-y and 88.1% y-o-y respectively, said MAHB.
Overall aircraft movements at KLIA decreased by 89.5% y-o-y, while aircraft movements at MASB airports decreased by 76.7% y-o-y in November 2020.
Nevertheless, MAHB noted that KLIA welcomed the return of Cathay Pacific Airways with one flight weekly, after a three-year absence.
In total, there were 58 scheduled and charter airlines operating at KLIA to 64 international destinations in 35 countries, including cargo flights to 21 countries in November.
Additionally, Istanbul SGIA passenger movements declined by 47.6% y-o-y in November 2020 to 1.5 million passengers, with domestic and international passengers down to 1.1 million (-38.9% y-o-y) and 440,000 (-61% y-o-y), respectively.
Total aircraft movements at Istanbul SGIA decreased by 35.9% y-o-y in November 2020, said MAHB.
“Istanbul SGIA passenger movements were slightly affected by the re-introduction of partial curfews on Nov 20, a measure imposed by the Government of Turkey due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases across Turkey,” said MAHB.
The airport operator noted that Pegasus Airlines operated to 33 domestic and 52 international destinations in 34 different countries in November, while Anadolujet operated 26 domestic and 13 international routes in eight different countries in November.
Shares of MAHB closed two sen or 0.32% higher at RM6.18 today, valuing the group at RM10.25 billion. From this year’s trough of RM4.05 on Oct 16, the counter has risen 52.6%. Year to date, however, the stock is still down by 18.7% from RM7.60.
