Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) introduced an ultraviolet chamber (UVC) in its toilets to protect the health and safety of both KLIA’s passengers and staff, as well as curb the spread of Covid-19.
The UVC is an automated device which produces ultraviolet (UV) light that interrupts the transmission of airborne infectious pathogens.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) group CEO Datuk Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh said MAHB’s top priority is keeping their passengers safe through the highest level of safety measures.
“We are including the UVC installation as part of our ongoing toilet refurbishment initiative.
“Airport safety is among the highest concerns among our airport guests, so it is crucial for us to keep exploring new ways to allay these concerns,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Currently, the device is installed at 24 toilets in KLIA, and installation will continue in phases over the next few months.

Since there are not many travellers, Mohd Shukrie also said this period has enabled MAHB to speed up their toilet refurbishment with minimum disruption to airport operations.
“The new toilets have been benchmarked against other worldclass design concepts to provide the best and safest passenger experience. With these new toilets, we hope to continue scaling up our service delivery quality, up keeping high hygiene standards and improving passenger satisfaction,” he added.
Toilet refurbishment was identified as one of MAHB’s mission critical projects and as such continued apace despite aggressive cost containment measures.
The project is currently undergoing its final phase involving 94 toilets and is expected to complete in June 2021. Out of the 94, 22 newly refurbished toilets will open in December 2020. The entire project started since June 2017 for a total of 225 toilets.
KLIA2 was recently crowned the top winner in the “Public Transport Stop” category at the National Level Public Toilet Competition.
Apart from KLIA2, Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Kota Baru, Kelantan, was also the champion for Kelantan’s Clean Public Toilet Competition which was held in conjunction with “Hari Kelantanku Bersih 2020”.
