Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has bagged the Asia Responsible Award (AREA) 2019 for spearheading sustainable green initiatives and creating value to the aviation industry.

In a statement today, it said the award, received in a ceremony held in Taiwan recently, was in recognition of its sustainability initiative for the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2).
Group chief executive officer Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin said MAHB has embarked on the project entitled “Embracing Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Aviation” to achieve various positive environmental impacts in 2018.
Hence, he said the award serves as a further inspiration to all its airport stakeholders to fully embrace its KUL Sustainability Charter, which is aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
MAHB has also been actively putting in place various strategies, including utilising chilled water for the air-conditioning cooling system, smart travellators, energy efficient automatic baggage handling systems, carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors, and efficient lighting around the airport.
In addition, MAHB is also utilising solar farm to generate electricity for the terminal buildings’ operations and smart water-efficient fittings to reduce water usage.
The solar farm generates 13,452,899 kWh electricity, representing 32 per cent of the terminal’s consumption.
Raja Azmi said klia2 has achieved its carbon reduction target of 132t Co2 for 2018.
“The target set for 2019 is a five per cent increment from the previous year at 3.288.6t Co2,” he added.
