As of Jan 31, approximately 312, 068 out of 586, 863 blacklisted National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) borrowers have come forward to discuss settling their loans, totalling RM967.9 million.
PTPTN chief executive officer Wan Ahmad Wan Yusoff said there was a positive trend in loan repayment following PTPTN’s flexible paying methods and enforcement by Immigration Department, introduced in recent years.
"With the enforcement in place, the number of borrowers who have come forward is increasing and we project more to come this year," he told reporters at the official launch of PTPTN’s latest kiosk at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2), here today.
Also present was Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Mary Yap Kain Ching.
Wan Ahmad said the corporation has projected a collection of RM4 billion this year.
"The amount is achievable because of the awareness and positive response from borrowers.
"We projected a collection of RM2 billion last year but successfully collected RM3.4 billion," he added.
Since March 1, PTPTN has set up 24-hour counters at the klia2 low-cost carrier terminal to enable defaulters who are blacklisted to repay their loans so they are no longer barred from leaving the country.
The kiosk is hoped to help travellers barred from leaving the country, to negotiate and settle on the spot.
Wan Ahmad also called on more borrowers to come to come forward as PTPTN is willing to talk and negotiate on amicable ways to settle their debt.
"The #BolehBincang campaign launched earlier this month is aimed at persuading loan defaulters to discuss their problems with PTPTN, which is ever willing to negotiate," he said.
