OAG, a data platform for the global travel industry, ranked Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) fourth among the most connected airports in its “Megahubs 2023” list.
OAG said in a statement the global top 20 megahubs included seven airports in Asia Pacific, among which the most connected was KLIA in fourth place and Japan’s Haneda Airport in fifth place.
AirAsia operates 34% of flights at KLIA.
OAG Head of Asia Pacific Mayur Patel said: “The resurgence of Asia Pacific airports reflects their key position as hubs for some of the world’s busiest routes, like the air corridor between Fukuoka and Tokyo Haneda, which has become the third busiest in the world.”
Among the Top 25 Low-Cost Megahubs, Asia Pacific dominates the rankings with 13 airports, in which Southeast Asia accounted for 53% of low-cost carrier operations.
KLIA ranked first in the region with 11,188 low-cost connections across more than 100 destinations.
OAG reported (19-Sep-2023) the following highlights from its 2023 ‘Megahubs’ report, ranking the most internationally connected airports:
- London Heathrow Airport reclaimed the position of the most internationally connected airport. British Airways remains the airport’s dominant airline with a 50% share of flights;
- New York John F Kennedy International Airport ranked second, up 16 places from 2019;
- Amsterdam Schiphol Airport ranked third, with KLM accounting for 53% of flights;
- Kuala Lumpur International Airport ranked fourth and is the most connected airport in Asia Pacific. AirAsia operates 34% of flights at the airport;
- Tokyo Haneda Airport ranked fifth, up from 22nd in 2019;
- Frankfurt Airport ranked sixth;
- Istanbul Airport joined the top 10 at seventh. Turkish Airlines is the airport’s dominant airline with a 79% share of flights;
- Seoul Incheon International Airport ranked eighth;
- Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport ranked ninth;
- Chicago O’Hare International Airport ranked 10th. The airport is ranked first in the US for domestic connectivity. United Airlines accounts for 48% of flights at the airport;
- Dubai International Airport is the top ranked airport in the Middle East and Africa at 16th.
Seven of the top 20 airports are in Asia Pacific, six are in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and six are in North America.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1, or KLIA, is Malaysia’s main International airport and one of the major airports in South East Asia.
The Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA) is now the largest and busiest airport in Malaysia. It was officially opened on 27 June 1998.
Since its inauguration in year 1998, KLIA has won numerous awards from international organizations such as Skytrax and International Air Transport Association for its comprehensive and professional list of facilities and services.
