Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd thanks Dr Md Mahmudul Hasan for sharing his concern about the safety and health of the workers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA).
As a responsible and leading airport operator, we are strictly guided by global and national standards, including on the management of facilities.
The same is practised by Urusan Teknologi Wawasan (UTW), our cleaning contractor at Terminal 1. This extends to ensuring the wellbeing of staff who are on duty.
In regard to the concerns highlighted in Dr Md Mahmudul’s letter, we want to clarify our standard operating procedures in maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness of the toilets at all times:
1. Working hours: Cleaning staff stationed at the toilets are entitled to an accumulated breaktime of up to two hours per day, which can be divided into several periods to accommodate prayer times. Depending on shift schedule, employees can take a break of 30 minutes each up to four times a day.
Cleaning staff are also responsible for keeping the immediate areas of the toilet clean. Part of their task is to dispose of the accumulated trash at certain times of the day.
They have the flexibility to move around in the vicinity of the area of assignment, be it inside or outside the toilets.
2. Ventilation: All the cleaning materials are biodegradable green chemicals. Our toilets are also equipped with exhaust fans (located at the sink and in each cubicle) to enable proper airflow and ventilation around the clock.
The standard rate for good air ventilation at public facilities is 12 to 15 air changes per hour. At KLIA Terminal 1, the ventilation rate is 15 air changes or more per hour.
3. Medical requirements: All cleaning staff undergo annual check-ups. Only those certified healthy are allowed to renew their work permits.
UTW takes the utmost care in safeguarding the health and safety of its workers, and strictly adheres to Occupational Safety and Health conditions.
4. Certification of services: UTW is a credible and reputable vendor in the cleaning and building management industry. It holds various certifications, such as ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems, ISO 45001: 2018 Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems, ISO 41001: 2018 Facility Management Systems and ISO 37001: 2016 Anti-bribery Management systems.
We hope the information provides more clarity on the matter.
We are always striving to improve the quality of our services and any feedback is valuable in helping us maintain a high standard, as well as ensure the wellbeing of not only our hardworking cleaning staff, but also the airport community at large.
Thank you and please continue to be our eyes and ears.
