The operator of the Malaysian Immigration System (myIMMs), which has been under fire for frequent breakdowns, is blaming power and Internet disruptions for the problems in the system.
But Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), which operates both the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and klia2, said there were no reports of sudden power failures in the country’s main gateways over the past year.
It said MyIMMs had its own connection to the airports’ Internet service provider and that operator HeiTech Padu Berhad Group or Immigration had yet to file a complaint on connectivity with the management.
Although there were monthly power outages to run tests on systems in the airport terminals, MAHB said all agencies and partners were informed ahead of time.
However, MAHB said since myIMMs was connected to the airports’ back-up power supply and had its own uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in the event of power failure, the outages would not matter.
“There has also been no report to our centralised IT Operation Centre by HeiTech or Immigration on problems with Internet connection,” it concluded.
This contradicted statements from HeiTech Padu chief executive officer Arif Mokhtar in a local daily that the system, which screens potential security threats entering the country, was reliant on electricity supply and Internet connection at the airports and was vulnerable to breakdowns due to outages.
The company blamed MAHB and the Immigration Department for the failures in the system after Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed lambasted the operator of the checkpoint counters in KLIA for running a system that frequently broke down, resulting in possible security threats.
