National carrier, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) bagged the passenger airline of the year award while low-cost carrier (LCC) AirAsia Bhd won the low-cost airline of the year award at the prestigious KLIA Awards 2013 held here, last Friday.
Meanwhile, the promising new foreign passenger airline of the year went to the Turkish Airlines and foreign airline of the year award in the passenger category was awarded to Indonesia AirAsia.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) held the KLIA Awards to honour the airport operator’s partners for 2013.
The award is aimed at recognising and motivating all Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) business partners that relentlessly push the boundaries of distinction in their fields to enable KLIA to advance in service excellence.
Deputy Minister of Transport, Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said the rapid growth of the aviation sector has played an important role in Malaysia’s economic development, especially in trade and tourism industries.
He added that its development has become the benchmark for the success of Malaysia’s transportation sector.
“We depend on a good transportation network that connects Malaysians to each other and to the rest of the world in order to prosper in today’s global economy,” Abdul Aziz said in his speech at KLIA Awards 2013.
Meanwhile, MAHB chairman Tan Sri Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Abdullah said the opening of klia2 has boosted KLIA’s position as one of Southeast Asia’s preferred aviation hub.
KLIA is not the only airport in the region to boast three independent runways which significantly improve the air traffic at the airport as it eases congestion and reduces taxiing time, he said.
“The enhanced comfort level and better connectivity available at klia2 compared with the low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) has allowed us to create a seamless and memorable travelling experience for passengers,” he added.
Meanwhile, KLIA was recognised as the top 3 World’s Best Airport in the 40 to 50 million passengers per annum category in the Skytrax 2014 World Airport Awards.
It also recently won the Large Airport of the Year Award at CAPA Awards for Excellence in Asia Pacific Aviation 2014.
Other winners include MASkargo, which bagged the airline of the year in terms of cargo category, as well as Korean Air as foreign airline of the year in the same category.
The chairman’s award on the other hand went to the former secretary general of Ministry of Transport Malaysia Datuk Seri Long See Wool.
