AirAsia celebrated the announcement of its new global headquarters with a groundbreaking ceremony at the new building’s site in Sepang; and the construction of the building will commence in December 2014.
Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia and Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, Executive Chairman ofAirAsia Berhad; who are also co-founders of the world’s best low-cost airline were present at the groundbreaking ceremony along with AirAsia Berhad’s Board of Directors, AirAsia Berhad’s CEO Aireen Omar, AirAsia X Berhad’s CEO Azran Osman-Rani; as well as AirAsia Allstars (employees).
The airline’s new corporate building will cover a gross floor area of 613,383 sq ft and six storeys, with a development cost of approximately RM140 million.
It will house both AirAsia and AirAsia X’s corporate offices and operations’ divisions, which are currently separated between the LCC Terminal and a temporary operations office at Gateway@klia2.
Targeted for completion in 2016, the AirAsia and AirAsia X new headquarters’ design reflects the airline’s determination in becoming the number one airline in Malaysia and across the region, while incorporating elements showcasing its professional, fun and friendly attitude.
AirAsia’s Group CEO Tony Fernandes said, “Building AirAsia was like starting a family. Based in Subang airport when we first started followed by KLIA, the LCC Terminal and now klia2, we have gone from strength to strength over the years, from a small airline to a force to be reckoned with in the industry. The family has now grown tremendously and we look forward to complete our brand new home.
“The new headquarters is designed with our AirAsia Allstars in mind, and we are committed to provide the best for our employees who are the pillars of strength and the reason for our success. We want them to take ownership of the place, so much so that we asked AirAsia Allstars to name the new building. Our new building will be called RedQ, short for RedQuarters and the person who named it is an AirAsia X flight attendant! This new global headquarters will better facilitate our growth and future plans, and we are all looking forward to its completion,” added Tony Fernandes.
AirAsia Allstars were invited to play an active part in naming the new global headquarters, and the campaign received over 1,300 entries. The name RedQ, representing RedQuarters was selected, as it echoes the dynamism and spirit of the company and its workforce in making AirAsia a resilient and successful airline.
The AirAsia corporate building features a modern design and will be equipped with several facilities such as surau, meeting rooms, cafes, spacious cafeteria, flight crew lounge, gymnasium and a rooftop which doubles as a venue for corporate and in-house events. The new building will be able to accommodate about 2,000 employees.
