Transport Minister Anthony Loke today said that he is confident Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad’s (MAHB) management will fulfil its commitment to improving the overall quality of service at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and other airports, despite existing problems.
In a Facebook post, Loke said that he visited KLIA yesterday, and the biggest issue at the airport was the inconsistent aerotrain service connecting the main terminal with the satellite building.
“At the moment, only one aerotrain set is operating, because the second is experiencing technical issues,” he said.
MAHB had already announced last year that it will be buying and installing a new aerotrain set, but the full upgrade project is expected to be completed only in March 2025.
“I do not deny that we are facing operational problems at KLIA, especially the aerotrain, but all responsible parties must have the courage to face and manage the problem,” Loke said.
He added that five steps have been taken to mitigate the issue while upgrading work continues.
“Firstly, shuttle buses will operate between the main terminal and the satellite building for the full duration, to reduce dependence on the aerotrain,” he said, adding that the travel time between the two buildings is two minutes.
He said that all MAHB and retail staff at the airport will only be allowed to use the shuttle bus service, and that longer buses will be added to the service in March.
He also said that more planes from international flights will be allowed to park at the main terminal, so that passengers will not have to travel from the satellite building.
“This can reduce the use of the aerotrain as passengers can walk straightaway to the immigration counter and the baggage claim area,” he said.
