Until May 31, relive the life and works of one of Malaysia’s greatest entertainers through artefacts, photography booths, and other novelties at the ‘Hanya Dikau’ exhibition.

Ask anyone who the greatest entertainer in Malaysian history is, and you will likely receive many answers. But for many, one name will immediately come to mind.
This, of course, is none other than P Ramlee, the man who epitomises the golden age of Malaysian cinema – the pinnacle of the local entertainment scene.
And while it has been decades since his passing, his legacy in the entertainment industry is recognised to this day.
On March 22, an exhibition showcasing the life and works of P Ramlee – born Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh – was launched at the KL International Airport (KLIA), on what would have been his 94th birthday.
The event is timely as his songs, such as “Suara Takbir”, are often heard during Ramadan and Hari Raya, with reruns of his classic films frequent during this period as well.

Jointly organised by the National Archives of Malaysia and Malaysia Airport Bhd, the exhibition, titled “Hanya Dikau” (“Only You”), runs until May 31.
Again, this date is significant in that it would mark the 50th anniversary of P Ramlee’s death.
As for the venue, the exhibition is largely aimed at foreign visitors who may not be aware of the thespian’s role in popular culture.
That said, there’s plenty on display that will appeal to locals, too. Guests are provided a detailed breakdown of his rise to fame, his greatest works, and lasting contributions to Malaysian cinema.

If you’re looking to sharpen your trivia knowledge of the man, this showcase should serve you well. Information boards throughout the space share tidbits and insight into P Ramlee’s fascinating life.
Did you know, for example, that the actor’s first role was that of a villain? His debut appearance was in the 1948 film “Chinta”, directed by B S Rajhans.
Also on display are artefacts belonging to the man himself – his director’s chair and film awards among them.
Elsewhere, photography booths have been set up resembling recognisable sets of his films. These include a recreation of Sekolah Umum Buta Huruf from the 1959 comedy “Pendekar Bujang Lapok”.

Amusingly, there’s an exhibit tucked away in one corner disguised to look like an outhouse. This, of course, is a reference to one of P Ramlee’s beloved works, “Ali Baba Bujang Lapok”, a retelling of “One Thousand and One Nights”.
Just when you think this structure is simply there for decorative purposes, take a look inside and you’ll receive a pleasant surprise: a karaoke set has been fitted into the outhouse!
As to be expected, the songs available are mostly classic tunes by P Ramlee and his beloved partner Saloma, whose “Selamat Hari Raya” is also often heard during the upcoming festive season.
It’s a treat for older folks, who can immerse themselves in fond memories while crooning away to songs from the ’60s and ’70s.

For film aficionados and memorabilia collectors, there’s even a little gift shop within the exhibition where you can buy P Ramlee-themed merchandise.
All in all, this is a fascinating and nostalgic showcase that will appeal to both the older generation and younger visitors. If you happen to be at KLIA in the next couple of months, drop by to learn more about Malaysia’s own greatest showman.
