The Immigration Department plans to initiate a “stacked” counter system at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to speed up processing of arrivals.
Its director-general, Datuk Ruslin Jusoh, expressed hope that the plan could be realised by year end with the cooperation of the Transport Ministry and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad.
“We understand the state of facilities at KLIA, but we at the Immigration Department level will run our operations based on the facilities that exist.
“However, we plan to add more counters. Insyaallah by the end of this year, we will add 12 more counters as we had proposed.
“The counters will be placed behind the existing counters, meaning that they will be stacked,” he said during the Ruang Bicara interview on BernamaTV.
Explaining the issue of congestion at KLIA on June 1 and 4 that went viral on social media, Ruslin said his officers at that time had to deal with nearly 5,000 visitors from eight aircraft that had just landed.
“On average every hour, there are eight aircraft scheduled to land with about 2,000 people. That is during normal peak period.
“However, on June 1 and 4, we had almost 5,000 visitors arrive at the same time. Alhamdulillah, we were able to clear them within two hours.
“During normal peak periods, we can clear passengers in less than an hour. But with that many visitors (on those days), I instructed my officers to help facilitate the process through Immigration checks,” he added.
