KLIA’s Aerotrain system, operating since the airport’s opening 24 years ago, is set to be replaced with an all-new train and track system by 2025.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) managing director Iskandar Mizal Mahmood said the undertaking would be implemented in phases, with the design phase starting on March 14, and will go on until March 2023.
“(In the design phase), multiple stakeholder engagements will be conducted to ensure that the new Aerotrain system meets local and international transport and safety standards.
“The second phase, between March 2023 and March 2025, will involve the construction of the new Aerotrain,” Iskandar said at a press briefing.

He said the new Aerotrain system would have three trains, comprising three coaches each.
Every coach will have a capacity for 90 passengers, with 270 passengers per train. An estimated 5,400 passengers are expected to travel every hour in one direction.
“To minimise inconvenience to passengers, we have also enhanced our round-the-clock bus services to better facilitate passenger movements,” he added.

Iskandar said MAHB would be replacing its current fleet of airport buses with six new units capable of travelling between the main terminal and the satellite buildings in about three minutes.
The first two of these buses will be arriving in November, while the remaining four will arrive by February 2023.
“These new buses will be able to accommodate up to 110 passengers per bus, double the current capacity.”
Iskandar said these buses would have WiFi connectivity, digital displays for infotainment and CCTV cameras for improved safety and security.
During this transition period, Iskandar said the existing Aerotrain service will continue running, but on a limited schedule, “to enable more robust maintenance” due to its ageing condition and to facilitate the replacement programme.
“At present, only one Aerotrain will be in operation at any given time,” he said, urging passengers to use the alternative bus service.
The operational hours for this Aerotrain will be from 6am to 10am, 12pm to 3.30pm, 5pm to 11.30pm, and 12.30am to 3.30am.
