Both terminals of the airport will be using biometric identification and facial recognition software to identify passengers and their credentials
A seamless operation with a paperless check-in system at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) following its partnership with Vision-Box to provide a biometric system for a range of airport processes.
Under the contract, Vision-Box will design, develop and deliver a new, end-to-end biometric digital identity management system to be deployed at both terminals of KLIA.
“Our solution is a paperless passenger experience. All the processes that are related to checking in baggage, checking in at security checkpoints, don’t require you to show your boarding pass all the time. It speeds up the process and it is a more secure process,” Vision-Box CEO Miguel Leitmann (picture) told The Malaysian Reserve recently.
The system will utilise biometric identification and facial recognition software to identify passengers and their credentials; it will also use a mobile app to allow passengers to access information on flight schedules and gate locations.

“Biometrics is the essence of the service platform that we are providing, through which airline operators and, in the future, border control authorities can optimise security processes and improve the passenger experience,” Leitman added.
He believes that the technology will revolutionise the way people travel and interact with each other.
The system, he said, aims to synergise with existing infrastructure, such as baggage handling, border control and ticketing machines, so that they can work together seamlessly without the need for manual intervention.
“Our solution is passenger-centric. We want to optimise the passenger’s experience. How can we do that? We can do that by bringing the stakeholders together at a table, and they can organise themselves around the needs of the passengers.”
It also aims to reduce the number of people required to operate each process, thereby reducing costs and improving efficiency.
Commenting on the privacy concerns surrounding the technology and whether it would be possible to keep personal data private, he said the system is not meant to collect or store any personal data.
Vision-Box is also planning to open its Centre of Excellence in Kuala Lumpur (KL) to attract more talent from around the world, including engineers, designers and developers, who are interested in working on the project.
The centre will then have a professional services division that gives the right support and can even develop local solutions for projects that they have in the region; it is also expected to have a training centre that can train professionals in the field.
“We have more than seven subsidiaries around the world. And, to service each of those subsidiaries that are divided into major regions around the world, and to have the right support in the South-East Asian area.
“We are constructing a Centre of Excellence in KL, which is a centre where we incorporate not only commercial support or maintenance support, but also capacity that allows us to develop and implement solutions in the region.
“Asia is the leading region for this kind of innovation to happen. And we are focusing because, while similar initiatives exist in Europe and even the US, the action is actually taking place, and the majority of these innovations are happening in Asia. And we want to be part of it,” he said.
