Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) today announced a new automatic ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system for arriving baggage to curb the spread of Covid-19 and other diseases.
In a statement, it said UV bulbs had been installed in an enclosed tunnel within the baggage handling system (BHS) to disinfect baggage automatically as they pass through the conveyor system.
“The UV radiation system is the latest initiative to ensure airport safety remains at the highest level,” it said.
MAHB group CEO Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh said the UV technology had been proven to effectively eliminate surface contaminants such as mold, bacteria and other microbial biofilms.

“With this new UV technology in place, passengers can be assured of their safety when collecting their clean and sanitised bags at the baggage claim area.”
He added the baggage system and the UV disinfection tunnels were part of MAHB’s upgrading programme.
Shukrie said the UV chamber had also been installed at washrooms to interrupt the transmission of infectious airborne pathogens.
MAHB said it would continue to explore new technologies and embrace latest global practices to restore passengers’ confidence in hygiene and safety standards at its airports.
