Additional counters will be set up at KLIA to expedite the process for illegal immigrants wanting to leave the country under the recalibration programme.
Immigration director-general Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud said the move was due to the high demand for the service since it started two weeks ago.
He said the extra counters would be opened at the airport’s short-term car park facility to accommodate between 850 and 1,000 people at one time. Currently, the counter service is available at level 3 of KLIA.
Khairul Dzaimee said that additionally, counters would be set up at level 2 of KLIA2 to serve 500 people at one time.
“The response for the counter service at KLIA has been very encouraging. We will be opening additional counters next week,” he said yesterday.
Earlier this month, the department had introduced the new initiative to facilitate the exit process for those who are taking the option to return to their home countries.
Between July 5 and 20, a total of 3,483 illegal immigrants had left the country via the counter service.
Since the programme was introduced in December last year, Immigration records showed a total of 101,691 illegal immigrants had registered with 83,117 of them having left Malaysia.
On reports that foreigners were left stranded at the airport after they missed their flights, Khairul Dzaimee said it was not the case nor were they asked to gather at KLIA.
“The fact is that they were waiting for their turns to pay the RM500 compound and to be issued with the check-out memo before they were allowed to leave,” he said.
Khairul Dzaimee said some of the illegals who had wanted to fly back home had missed their flights because they turned up late to undergo the process.
“So they stayed at the airport to catch the next flight,” he said.
Illegals who want to return home using the Immigration counter facility at KLIA must produce a swab test result that is valid for 72 hours, a one-way flight ticket and a valid travel document. They need not schedule an appointment to seek services at the counter but must pay a compound of RM500.
