The new state-of-the-art Kuala Lumpur Air Traffic Control Centre (KLATCC) here will improve the efficiency of the nation’s air traffic services so that they would be on par with developed countries, says Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
In his opening address at the opening yesterday, the Prime Minister said KLATCC not only provides air traffic services for Peninsular Malaysia’s entire airspace, but also coordinates the Aeronautical Search and Rescue Centre and the Joint Airspace Management Coordination Centre (JAMCC).
“The state-of-the-art integrated control centre will certainly enhance the capacity and preparedness of the country to face the challenging global aviation scenario and to support a brighter future,” he said at the event also attended by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia chief executive officer Captain Chester Voo.
Ismail Sabri said the KLATCC, which was a project worth RM650.365mil under the 11th Malaysia Plan, was also timely as it is expected to further assist recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic while propelling the aviation industry here to be on par with its global counterparts.
The KLATCC building, inspired by the wau (Malaysian kite) design, houses the Kuala Lumpur Air Flight Information (KL FIR) air traffic operations centre, which is the backbone of the country’s air traffic control functions, as well as the search and rescue centre.
The premier said KLATCC would be an important asset to the country so that Malaysia will be able to support the progress of other industries.
Aside from that, the increase in flight movements and airspace capacity from the new KLATCC certainly would have a positive impact on the economy, especially for the civil aviation industry, he added.
“Although the aviation industry faced a visible decline since the start of the pandemic in early 2020 from the closure of international borders, the sector is expected to recover by 2025.
“So the operations of KLATCC is timely… it is my greatest hope, that with the opening of the country’s borders soon, it will further stimulate the aviation sector and lead to a positive impact on the economy,” he said.
Ismail Sabri said the new KLATCC was an example of the Malaysian Family concept as it was built on local talent and expertise.
“It is my hope that the experience gained will be used to its best and become a guide for the future.
“This will reduce our dependence on foreign expertise, which will directly reduce the outflow of resources.
“This situation also shows that local expertise and skills are on par with foreign expertise, and perhaps much better in some aspects,” he added.
