Traveller Hastina Hassim and her family were happy to receive face masks distributed by the Crisis Relief Squad of MCA (CRSM) at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Hastina, 35, who was travelling with her family to Saudi Arabia to do their umrah, said she has been using washable masks made of cloth.
“It’s good to get one of these disposable masks as it is more effective.
“It’s quite hard to find disposable masks so we have been using washable ones. You need to wash it at the end of the day to be used the next day, ” she said.
Hastina said that she will be taking extra precautions while travelling due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in Wuhan, China.
“We always wash our hands and now we are carrying hand sanitisers to be used on the plane, ” she said, adding that she plans to wear a mask throughout her time in flight.
Hastina and her family were among the travellers who received disposable masks from the Selangor and Wilayah branches of CRSM at the airport yesterday.
Selangor CRSM chief Ch’ng Soo Chau said that 1,000 disposable masks were distributed at KLIA, while 1,000 were distributed at the Penang International Airport and another 1,000 were distributed at Senai International Airport by the CRSM branches in the respective states on the same day.
“We felt that we have to do something due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, as there is a lack of action from the government to address this.
“Apart from distributing these masks, we also want to create awareness among the public on the ways they can take to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, such as washing their hands.
“We also want the public to know where to get factual updates on the coronavirus, ” said Ch’ng.
He and about 12 members of CRSM took about 45 minutes to distribute the masks at the airport, taking their time to talk to members of the public and travellers on ways to take care of themselves and how to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
Ch’ng also urged companies manufacturing items such as masks and gloves to assist CRSM in its fundraising efforts to fight the coronavirus.
