THREE new clusters of the Covid-19 were detected, with one more fatality recorded in the country yesterday, amid fears of a second wave of infection.
According to the Health Ministry (MoH), these clusters involved a shared residence in Selangor, a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur and a jetty operation in Sarawak.
Health DG Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said those detected under all three clusters are non-residents, infected through local transmission.
Fifteen new cases were reported yesterday, bringing the total cases to 8,779 with 103 active cases. One fatality was recorded in Johor, bringing the total deaths to 123.
Of the 15 new cases, 11 were locally transmitted cases, involving eight Malaysians and three non-Malaysians.
“Of the cases involving local residents, five were found in Sarawak and one in Selangor, Sabah and Johor respectively.
“The other local transmission cases involve three non-residents, each under a shared residence in the Sepang cluster, the restaurant in Brickfields and the jetty operation in Kuching,” Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement.
Separately, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said another 78 individuals have been arrested by the authorities for violating the regulations under the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO).
“Among the offences are the gathering of mass crowds, which obstructed the social distancing practices, and other activities that violate the standard operating procedures (SOPs),” he said in a statement.
He added that 2,774 monitoring teams involving 12,360 personnel have conducted inspections of more than 16,700 premises, including restaurants, supermarkets, hawker stalls, factories, banks and government offices.
“The task force led by the police has conducted 64,303 inspections on July 18 to monitor the implementation of RMCO’s SOPs.
“They also monitored travel points including 1,497 road terminals, 360 sea terminals and 130 air terminals,” he said.
The minister also said Malaysian border will continue to be strengthened under “Operasi Benteng” with the cooperation of the Malaysian Armed Forces, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, the Border Security Agency and the Royal Malaysia Police.
“The police have conducted 67 roadblocks and inspected 40,495 vehicles which were believed to be transporting illegal immigrants.
“The police have also arrested 14 foreigners for immigration offences,” he said.
To date, he said MoH has screened 21,014 individuals at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) between June 10 and July 18, where 77 persons tested positive with the coronavirus.
As of July 18, 934 Malaysians have returned through KLIA and KLIA2, of which 933 were ordered to self-quarantine and one was brought to the hospital, said Ismail Sabri.
