THE Ministry of Health (MoH) reported 21 new Covid-19 cases in the country yesterday, involving 15 import cases and six local transmissions.
Of the imported cases, 12 were from Yemen and one case each from Papua New Guinea, Ivory Coast and the UK.
Health DG Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said all these import cases were segregated at the quarantine centre after arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
“The implementation of strict international border control is important to prevent the spread of local infections from abroad,” he said in his Covid-19 statement yesterday.
Of the six local transmissions, three cases were linked to the Sivagangga cluster in Kedah, two from hospitals in Sabah and one from a hospital in Johor.
The new cases yesterday have brought the country’s overall total to 9,023, with 196 active cases that are being treated at health facilities nationwide.
Among the active cases, two have been placed in intensive care unit, with none of them requiring respiratory aid.
Meanwhile, 18 patients recovered yesterday, increasing the total recovered cases in the country to 8,702, which equals 96.4%.
No new deaths have been recorded. The country’s death tally remains at 125.
As of noon yesterday, the MoH screened a total of 1,647 people from the Sivagangga cluster.
Of the total, 24 individuals tested positive to Covid-19, 754 tested negative and the remaining were still waiting for their result.
“The breakdown of positive cases in this cluster involves nine Malaysian citizens and five non-citizens.
“The ministry is actively carrying out tracking activities and current situations will be updated. The public is advised not to spread any false and inaccurate messages regarding this cluster,” he said.
Separately, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the Royal Malaysia Police and the MoH acted against five people who violated their mandatory 14-day home quarantine yesterday.
The police checked the homes of 1,969 individuals in a joint operation with the officers from MoH, as part of their ongoing effort to break the Covid-19 infection chain.
“From July 24 to Aug 4, a total of 5,355 individuals who returned to Malaysia were placed in 21 hotels and five public training institutes. Of that number, 13 were taken to the hospital for treatment,” he said in a statement yesterday.
The senior minister added that the police have checked 64,656 premises nationwide as part of their Recovery Movement Control Order operations nationwide.
“Among the areas that were inspected include 4,110 supermarkets; 6,083 restaurants; 1,325 hawker stalls; 1,114 factories; 3,819 banks; and 797 government offices,” he said.
From the total, eight were remanded, while 119 were issued compounds for various offences.
Ismail Sabri said the offences include failure to comply with the standard operating procedures, participating in an event with no physical distancing and premises exceeding stipulated business hours.
