EGYPTIAN tourist Sherif Radwan received a surprise when boarding the KLIA Ekspres as he was its 100 millionth passenger.
Unbeknown to him and his wife, Nour Kazzaz, they boarded the train on the day that Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) — the operator of the KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit services — celebrated the significant milestone on July 25. The KL Sentral-bound train departed from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 11am.
This just added more meaning to the newlyweds’ honeymoon vacation.
Amid the celebratory balloon decorations, onboard announcements and excited chatter, fellow passengers rummaged through their goodie bags which were distributed upon departure for the winning ticket number.
Sherif, holding the lucky ticket, was presented with the grand prize of a trip for two to Japan, inclusive of flight tickets, accommodation and ground experiences worth RM10,000.
Other passengers, however, did not leave empty handed — they each received a Klook voucher to book travel activities and services, gifts and snacks.
Following the launch of its train services in 2002, ERL had carried 1.04 million passengers within its first year of operations. It celebrated its 50 millionth passenger in 2014, just before the services were extended to KLIA2.
By August 2016, ERL had recorded 75 million passengers on both services and has been carrying an average of nine million passengers yearly since then.
ERL CEO Noormah Mohd Noor said it was a remarkable yet humbling achievement.
“It is an important milestone and a testament to our commitment to providing the best travel experience which is efficient, reliable and safe to our customers.
“ERL is proud to have maintained an impeccable 99.7% on-time service performance until now. We would like to sincerely thank our customers for their continuous support,” she said in a statement.
The grand prize and vouchers were sponsored by ERL’s event partner and strong valued business partner, Klook, a leading travel activities and services booking platform with more than 100,000 activities across 300 destinations.
Klook head of marketing in Malaysia Emily Tan was also on board, along with Tourism, Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, who presented the grand prize to the winner on the train.
