Airport authority Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad has reported an “overwhelming response” to its ambitious programme of commercial tenders for space in its new “next generation hub” in Kuala Lumpur, klia2. Over 1,000 companies registered their interest during the first two phases of the process, and the deadline for submissions for Phase Three passes on 17 May. Briefings for companies invited to take part in the fourth and final phase will be held on 18 and 23 May.

During Phase Four of the exercise, Malaysia Airports will seek proposals for seven commercial packages – five for retail, and two for food & beverage.

Malaysia Airports has stated that its goal is to make klia2 “the ultimate travel retail platform to showcase brands, products and services”. The current tender concerns 225 outlets at the terminal – 118 having been allocated to retail, 81 to F&B and 26 to miscellaneous services. In total 35,200sq m of retail space is available, designed to create “a thriving shopping scene”.
A walk-through duty free store will form one of the cornerstones of the retail offer, with bars and island cafe also prominent in the commercial mix. The terminal will also feature a Movie and Sports Lounge.
Malaysia Airports Senior General Manager, Commercial Services Division Puan Faizah Khairuddin said: “We are very pleased with the overwhelming response to our retail tender exercise. It demonstrates that retailers truly caught our vision for klia2, that it is not just an airport but an airport in a mall that is designed to maximise commercial offerings.
“In klia2, we are creating an exciting retail adventure that embodies a new and differentiated retail experience; where services are a step ahead, facilities are future-oriented, offerings are robust and the experience unforgettable.
“Our aspiration is to change the mindset of travellers, helping them to realise that their vacation begins and end at klia2. We want to engage them and give them an experience that is ELITE ‘Experiential, Liberating, Innovative, Thrilling and Ever-changing’ so that they will keep coming back to find out more. In short, we want them to be ‘Curious’ about klia2.”

Khairuddin said that Malaysia Airports would work closely with chosen retailers to create the best possible customer experience at klia2. “The Phase Four tender offerings are really exciting. For the innovative and creative, the possibilities would be amazing.
“We have three emporiums for a vast variety of lifestyle products, four F&B islands that form an integral part of retail outlets, two experiential retail locations and a premium food court that promises endless gourmet adventure. Truly, I hope those who are interested do not miss out on this golden opportunity.”
Malaysia Airports expects to announce the results of the tender by July 2012. The klia2 terminal is scheduled to open in April 2013.
