The Express Rail Link (ERL) which operates the rail system linking the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and klia2 with the city centre is striving to improve its services to be on par with the Hong Kong airport rail line.
ERL chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Nor said the company was also working to meet customer demand for its services, including improving speed frequency and comfort for passengers on board.
However, she also noted there were several challenges that the company needed to improve, especially with regard to offering competitive fare to commuters as the majority of the passengers were daily commuters who used the system to travel to and from work.
"Some of the major challenges we are facing include the competition with other airport rail models, (and) the current fare increase of 47 per cent is what we can call a disaster," said Noormah in her presentation at the 16th UITP Asia-Pacific Assembly Publication here Tuesday. She said the ERL system had commuted some 30 million passengers since its launch in 2002.
"We want our ERL system to be like the Shinjuku Airport in Japan which commutes 3.5 million passengers daily."
The KLIA Express fare increased its one-way fare from RM35 to RM55 early this year, a fare travellers felt to be too costly.
On another session, Land Transport Authority (LTA), Singapore deputy director Ong Eu Gene said Singapore was working on developing a 'Cycling' approach mode of transportation by building cycle ways for its public to take advantage of.
"In 15 to 20 years, the transportation mobility will be very different. Car dominant transportation model will become irrelevant," said Ong during his talk on 'Strategy & Planning of Singapore's Active Mobility Plan'.
"Thus, we (Singapore LTA) want to create a working network that is safe and comfortable; therefore, we feel that cycling as a mode of transportation is good and are planning to integrate a comprehensive cycling network in our towns."
To show the republic's seriousness in fully integrating the 'Walk, Cycle and Ride' transportation means, a pilot half-day course on cycling will be introduced to educate cyclists on the rules and safety regulations.
Meanwhile, India through its MYSORE ITS Project (MITRA) has implemented a widescale transportation service in the Karnataka state's city of Mysore which allows public transportation commuters to fully utilise its call centre and SMS facility to find information on the next available bus to their destination. – Bernama
