The government’s move in building the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) 2 is apt as it is intended to accommodate the rapid increase in passengers for low cost flights, the Dewan Negara was told yesterday.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said the existing Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) could no longer meet the passenger increase and did not have room for expansion.
“The construction of klia2 will provide comfort to passengers with a bigger terminal floor space of 257,000 square metres which can accommodate up to 45 million passengers a year,” he said in response to a question by Senator Datuk Syed Ibrahim Kader.
Abdul Rahim said klia2 would also be linked to the Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) public transport service.
klia2 would also be equipped with a multi-storey car park that could accommodate 6,000 vehicles, he added.
He said that with the location of klia2 besides KLIA, they could share the parking bays, which had been increased to 76, from 38 previously.
The location of klia2 near the landing strip, it would shorten the distance between the terminal and the taxiway and hence, able to reduce operation cost of airline companies concerned.
